Tlaxco is a highland town in northern Tlaxcala, set between forest, maguey fields, and old hacienda country. It is one of those Pueblos Magicos where the appeal is not a single blockbuster monument, but the way the town, the countryside, and the local crafts fit together.
The centre is small and easy to read. The Parroquia de San Agustin gives the plaza its baroque weight, while the Museo de la Madera explains the woodwork that shows up in local workshops and market stalls. A short walk out of the centre brings you to the Laberintos de Tlaxco, a dry, narrow little canyon that feels surprisingly wild for something so close to town.
Tlaxco is also cheese and pulque country. Come around late August and the fair for cheese, wood, and pulque gives the town its best excuse to show off. At other times it works as a slow day trip from Tlaxcala or Puebla, especially if you want a small-town stop with a sharper identity than the usual pretty plaza.
