Hope Memorial Bridge

A 1932 truss bridge guarded by giant Art Deco Guardians of Traffic

The Hope Memorial Bridge carries Lorain–Carnegie Avenue across the Cuyahoga River and is anchored at each end by four monumental Art Deco figures — the Guardians of Traffic — each over forty feet tall and clutching a different mode of transport: a covered wagon, a stagecoach, an automobile, a truck. They were designed by Henry Hering in 1932 and are unique to Cleveland.

The bridge is named for Bob Hope's father, William Henry Hope, a stonemason who worked on the project. A walk across the south sidewalk gives the best view of the downtown skyline and the river beneath; it is also part of the city's ongoing waterfront trail network.

Free to walk; the trailhead is in Ohio City at the western anchor and at the Tower City end downtown.
