One of America's oldest planned shopping districts, completed in 1929 as the gateway to Shaker Heights. The Georgian architecture gives it more character than any strip mall, and the Shaker Rapid light rail runs right through the center, making it easy to reach from downtown. The retail mix goes through cycles -- boutiques, restaurants, and a movie theater come and go -- but the bones are always good. Worth a visit for the architecture alone, and easily combined with a walk through the leafy streets of Shaker Heights.
