Charleston City Market

Historic open-air market with Gullah sweetgrass basket weavers

A four-block open-air market running from Meeting Street to East Bay along Market Street, housed in the original 1804 Market Hall and a line of sheds behind it. Gullah women still weave sweetgrass baskets here using the West African coiling technique passed down since the 18th century — they are one of the few genuine crafts for sale. The Confederate Museum upstairs in the main hall is an unusual and occasionally uncomfortable survival of another era.
