St. Matthew's Lutheran Church is one of the landmarks that gives upper King Street its vertical punctuation. The Gothic Revival church, with its tall spire and warm-toned brickwork, stands apart from Charleston's more familiar Anglican and colonial-era buildings.
It is not as essential as Fort Sumter, the Battery, or the major house museums, but it is a worthwhile architectural stop when walking between Marion Square, the Charleston Museum, and the shopping blocks of King Street. Its value is strongest as part of that streetscape.
