Fireproof Building

The Fireproof Building is a National Historic Landmark from 1827, designed by Robert Mills, the Charleston-born architect later associated with the Washington Monument. Its restrained Greek Doric style and masonry construction made it one of the earliest fire-resistant public buildings in the United States.

The South Carolina Historical Society is based here, and even a brief look at the exterior fits well into a walk through Charleston's historic core.
