The Modern's collection has fewer star pieces than the Kimbell but a much broader sweep across post-war American and European art: Pollock, Rothko, Lichtenstein, Warhol, Richter, Kiefer, Bourgeois. Tadao Ando's building is one of the great museum buildings of the early 2000s, with long vistas through glass walls toward the reflecting pool and the Kimbell across the way.
Most visitors pair this with the Kimbell and the Amon Carter — all three sit within a five-minute walk of each other. Allow at least ninety minutes. The Café Modern overlooking the pool is a quiet spot for lunch.
