Praça do Pôr do Sol

Hilltop park famed for sunset views over the Pinheiros valley, with weekend music and beer vendors

Praça do Pôr do Sol — officially Praça Coronel Custódio Fernandes Pinheiro, but known to everyone as Sunset Square — is a grassy slope on the western edge of Vila Madalena, looking out over the Pinheiros valley. As the name promises, it is São Paulo's favourite place to watch the sun go down, and on a clear evening the lawn fills with people who have come for exactly that.

The scene peaks on Saturday and Sunday afternoons: musicians playing chorinho and samba, families with dogs and picnic blankets, students, and vendors selling cold beer from coolers. It is free, unstructured, and quintessentially paulistano — a slice of the city's open-air social life. Come an hour before sunset to claim a spot on the grass, and bring something to sit on.
