Uruguay's main art museum holds the national collection of Uruguayan art from the 19th century to the present, housed in a neoclassical building in the Parque Rodó area. The collection includes works by Juan Manuel Blanes, the country's most revered 19th-century painter, and traces the development of Uruguayan visual arts through several generations.
The museum is less impressive than equivalent national collections in Argentina or Brazil, but it gives a clear picture of Uruguayan artistic tradition and includes some strong paintings. The park setting makes it a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours, and the museum shop is good. Admission is free.
