Bangabandhu Memorial Museum

The former family home of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, known as Bangabandhu (Friend of Bengal) — the founding father of Bangladesh — preserved as a memorial museum in Dhanmondi. On the night of 15 August 1975, Rahman and nearly his entire family were assassinated here in a military coup. The house has been maintained in the condition it was found immediately after the attack.

The museum gives context on Rahman's political life and the independence movement, but the haunting quality of the place comes from the house itself: the preserved rooms, the bloodstained walls, and the photographs documenting what happened. A serious, affecting experience for anyone interested in Bangladeshi history. Dhanmondi Road 32.

A story
In the early hours of 15 August 1975, a group of army officers and soldiers entered this building and shot Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his wife, and most of his family. His daughter Sheikh Hasina and her sister survived only because they were abroad. The house was preserved as it was at the time of the attack and reopened as a museum in 1994. The bullet holes in the walls and staircase are still visible.
