Lalbagh Fort

Unfinished 17th-century Mughal fort in old Dhaka

An unfinished Mughal fort on the banks of the Buriganga river in the old city, begun in 1678 by Prince Muhammad Azam, son of Aurangzeb. Construction was abandoned in 1684 after the death of Pari Bibi — the daughter of the governor Shaista Khan — who was to be married into the imperial family. Her tomb, in the centre of the complex, is faced with marble, and the three main structures (the mosque, the Hammam, and the audience hall) survive in a neat garden that is one of the few quiet spots in Puran Dhaka. Open daily except Sundays; small entry fee.
