Museum of Independence

An underground museum beside Suhrawardy Udyan (the park where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his historic 7th March 1971 speech calling for independence, and where the Pakistani forces surrendered on 16 December 1971). The museum covers the history of the Bangladesh Liberation War and the events leading to independence — partition, the Language Movement, the political movements of the 1960s, and the war itself.

The exhibits are extensive and the archive photographs and film footage are valuable. The presentation is occasionally heavy-handed but the underlying history is one of the more dramatic national stories of the 20th century, and this is the most comprehensive treatment of it in Dhaka. Free entry; open Tuesday to Sunday.
