A private museum dedicated to the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, established in 1996 by a group of intellectuals and activists — not the government. The collection documents the nine months of the war, the atrocities committed by Pakistani forces (including the killing of intellectuals in the final days), and the formation of the Mukti Bahini (Freedom Fighters). Oral history recordings, photographs, and personal objects give the story an immediacy that official commemorations sometimes lack.
The museum moved to a purpose-built building in Agargaon in 2017 and now has considerably more exhibition space than its original location. It is more intellectually honest and critical than the official Museum of Independence. Open Tuesday to Sunday; closed Monday. Small entry fee.
