Murray House

Rebuilt colonial barracks on Stanley promenade, moved brick by brick from Central

Murray House is one of Hong Kong's oldest colonial buildings, though not in its original place. It began as officers' barracks in Central, was dismantled brick by brick in 1982, then reconstructed beside the Stanley promenade in 2001.

The move was not simple: markings on the stored bricks faded, and the reconstruction left several stone pillars unused. Those leftover pieces now stand beside the building as an accidental monument to the whole awkward process.
