Nanchang Uprising Monument

The Nanchang Uprising Monument (南昌起义纪念碑) stands at the northern end of Bayi Square, a granite obelisk rising 45.5 meters above the plaza. The monument is inscribed with the names of the uprising's key figures and decorated with bas-reliefs depicting the assault. It forms the focal point of the entire civic space and is the most photographed single object in the city.

The monument was completed in 1977 and underwent restoration in the 1990s. Its proportions and the authority of its setting make it one of the more effective examples of Chinese revolutionary monumentalism — genuinely imposing rather than merely large. The daily flag-raising ceremony at the base is worth watching if you're an early riser.
