People's Park (人民公园) is Nanchang's largest central park, covering around 46 hectares in the eastern part of the city. The park contains a lake, walking paths, pavilions, a small amusement section for children, and the kind of relaxed public life that Chinese parks do exceptionally well. On weekend mornings, it fills with retired residents practicing calligraphy on the paving stones with water brushes, doing t'ai chi, or participating in informal musical gatherings with erhu and traditional instruments.
The park is free to enter and open all day. It's a good place to observe Nanchang's ordinary rhythms away from the monumental civic spaces, and a pleasant cool-off on summer afternoons when the tree canopy provides genuine shade. The lake at the center has paddle boats for rent.
