Shengjin Tower (绳金塔) is a seven-story Tang dynasty pagoda standing in the Xihu district, one of the few surviving ancient structures in a city that has been repeatedly rebuilt. The current structure dates primarily to reconstructions in the Song and Ming dynasties, though the site has been occupied since the Tang. The pagoda is compact and elegant rather than imposing, set in a small park surrounded by a temple complex that remains active.
The area around Shengjin Tower has been developed into one of Nanchang's old-town commercial streets — the Shengjin Tower Historical and Cultural Block — with restored Qing and Republican-era shophouses now housing restaurants, tea houses, and craft shops. It's a better version of the typical Chinese historic street redevelopment than most: the architecture is genuine rather than newly built, and the food and tea offerings are genuinely local rather than generic tourist fare.
