The commercial street surrounding Wanshou Palace has been developed into one of the city's main culinary destinations, with restaurants serving Jiangxi dishes alongside snack vendors, tea houses, and dessert shops in restored Qing-dynasty shophouses. The selection is genuinely local rather than generic — you'll find clay-pot dishes, freshwater crab, smoked pork with dried chilli (熏肉), and the Jiangxi version of steamed fish with black bean sauce that the city does particularly well.
The street is most lively on weekend evenings when it becomes a de facto night market. Prices are moderate by Chinese urban standards: a full meal at a sit-down restaurant will cost 50 to 80 yuan per person. Several places serve good versions of the regional snack of rice dumplings wrapped in lotus leaf (荷叶包).
