Pedestrian Street Cafes

The Pedestrian Street (中山路步行街) in central Donghu has been a commercial spine of the city since the Republican era and has accumulated a dense layer of cafes, milk tea shops, and bars over the renovations of recent decades. International chain cafes (Starbucks, Luckin) coexist with small independent coffee places and an above-average selection of Taiwanese-style milk tea establishments that take their drinks seriously.

The street is busiest on weekend evenings when it fills with Nanchang's young adult population. Several of the older buildings along the street retain their Republican-era facades, giving the commercial activity a more interesting architectural backdrop than the typical Chinese pedestrian zone. The bars in the lanes running off the main street tend to be quieter and cheaper than the main-street establishments.
