Youmin Temple (佑民寺) is Nanchang's most significant active Buddhist temple, located in the Donghu district and operating since the Liang dynasty in the sixth century. The main hall houses a large bronze Buddha cast in 522 CE — one of the oldest large bronze Buddhist figures in Jiangxi — along with several later sculptures. The temple complex includes residential quarters for monks and a vegetarian restaurant open to visitors.
The temple remains genuinely active rather than merely a tourist attraction: incense burns continuously, worshippers file through on weekday mornings, and the resident monks maintain regular chanting schedules. It's a useful counterpoint to the political monuments that dominate the city's official sightseeing narrative.
