Pangandaran is a relaxed beach town on the south coast of Java, popular with Indonesian families but still far from the international beach crowds of Bali. The sand is dark, the sea can be rough, and the town has a simple resort feel: guesthouses, seafood stalls, surfboards, and becaks waiting near the bus terminal.
The setting is the main reason to come. A wooded headland forms the Pananjung nature reserve at the end of town, with monkeys, deer, caves, and a white-sand beach tucked away from the main strip. West of Pangandaran, the coast breaks into fishing villages, surf beaches, and the limestone gorge usually sold to travellers as Green Canyon.
Pangandaran is not polished, and that is part of the appeal. It works best if you want a few slow days by the sea, a little surfing or swimming when conditions are safe, and an easy base for the wilder coast around Cijulang.
