Samadhi of Ranjit Singh

The marble cremation memorial of Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire, sits directly south of Lahore Fort facing the Badshahi Mosque across the Hazuri Bagh. A gold dome rises over a square pavilion; the building is part Sikh shrine, part Mughal pleasure-pavilion, and it remains an active gurdwara — pilgrims from Indian Punjab visit on Ranjit Singh's death anniversary every June.

Visitors must cover their heads and remove their shoes to enter. The eleven small marble urns inside, set around the central lotus, are the most affecting detail.

A story
When Ranjit Singh's body was cremated here in 1839, four of his queens and seven concubines threw themselves onto the pyre in sati. Eleven small lotus-shaped marble urns inside the samadhi mark their ashes; the larger central lotus is for the Maharaja himself.
