Castle Saalhof

One of the oldest castles in the Pinzgau region, north of the lake

Castle Saalhof stands a few kilometres north of Zell am See and is considered one of the oldest surviving fortifications in the Pinzgau region. The structure dates back to the medieval period, when the Pinzgau valley was a significant trade and salt-transport route. The castle's position on high ground gave it command of the valley road.

The building has been converted to private use, so access to the interior is not possible, but the exterior and the views from the approach road make it worth the short detour for anyone interested in the region's history.
