Schmittenhöhe

1,965m ski and hiking mountain above the town with panoramic lake views

The mountain that defines Zell am See's winter season, the Schmittenhöhe rises to 1,965m above the town and is reached by a combination of gondola and chairlifts departing from the edge of the old centre. In winter it offers around 77km of marked pistes across all difficulty levels, with reliable snow cover from December to April and excellent nursery slopes for beginners near the summit.

In summer the mountain transforms into a hiking destination. The summit restaurant has panoramic views across the Zeller See to the Hohe Tauern range, including the distant profile of the Grossglockner. Several hiking routes descend through alpine meadows, and the disc golf course near the summit provides an unexpected addition to the mountain's summer activities.

A story
The Schmittenhöhe takes its name not from a person called Schmitt but from the old Bavarian word for a mountain hut (Schmiede). When the first cable car opened in 1927, Zell am See became one of the first alpine resorts in the world to offer mechanical mountain access to ordinary tourists rather than just professional mountaineers.
