Vogtturm and Local History Museum

Medieval watchtower turned local history museum

The Vogtturm is one of the oldest buildings in Zell am See's town centre, a medieval watchtower that now houses the local history museum. Inside, exhibits trace the area from prehistoric lake settlements through the founding of the Augustinian monastery to centuries of alpine farming life. The tower itself is worth the visit for the views from the top over the lake and surrounding mountains.

The museum covers the region's agricultural and salt-trading history, the development of the resort from the late 19th century onwards, and a collection of local artefacts including tools, clothing, and religious objects. Entry is modest. Combined with a visit to the nearby Church of St Hippolytus, it makes for a good hour of sightseeing in the old town even in ski season.
