Statue of Bruce Lee

Life-size bronze of the kung fu star erected as a symbol of unity in postwar Mostar.

In a quiet corner of Zrinjski Park on the western, Croat-majority side of Mostar stands a life-size bronze statue of Bruce Lee in a fighting stance. It was unveiled in November 2005, a day before another Bruce Lee statue in Hong Kong, making Mostar briefly the world's only city with a Bruce Lee monument.

The choice was political as much as cinematic. After the war, no local hero could be honoured without offending one of Mostar's communities, so a Hong Kong action star was chosen as a deliberately neutral symbol of justice and skill. The original was vandalised almost immediately; the current statue is a replacement. It remains a peculiar, oddly moving sight tucked between the park's trees.

A story
The statue was conceived as a deliberately neutral hero everyone in divided Mostar — Bosniaks, Croats, Serbs — could agree on. It was vandalised the day after its 2005 unveiling and the original was eventually removed; a replacement now stands in Zrinjski Park.
