Karađoz Bey Mosque

The largest and most architecturally important Ottoman mosque in Herzegovina.

Built in 1557 by the Ottoman vizier Mehmed-Beg Karađoz, this is the largest and architecturally most significant mosque in Herzegovina. It sits a few minutes' walk north of the Stari Most on the east bank, on Braće Fejića street. The single-domed prayer hall, the portico of three smaller domes, and the elegant pencil minaret follow the classical Ottoman style.

The mosque was severely damaged during the 1992–95 war and restored afterwards. Inside, the original 16th-century floral and geometric painted decoration has been carefully reconstructed. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times. The complex around it was once a kulliye — a religious-educational compound with a madrasa and primary school — and traces of those structures still survive in the surrounding lanes.
