The original 19th-century Franciscan church on this site was destroyed in the Bosnian War. The replacement, completed in 2000, is unmissable: a vast modern church with a free-standing bell tower 107 metres tall — the highest in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The tower was built deliberately oversized, taller than every minaret in town, and has been a flashpoint in postwar debates about how reconstruction has hardened divisions.
Inside, the church is light, airy and modern, with simple stained glass and a contemporary interior. The bell tower can be climbed for one of the widest panoramic views over Mostar — across the old town, the river, and the surrounding karst hills.
