Holy Trinity Cathedral

Serbian Orthodox cathedral rebuilt on a hill overlooking Mostar, with a steep walk for a panoramic view.

High on a hill east of the centre, the rebuilt Holy Trinity Cathedral is the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Zahumlje and Herzegovina. The original 1873 cathedral was one of the largest in the Balkans and the most important Orthodox building in Mostar; it was destroyed in 1992 at the start of the war. Reconstruction began in 2010 and is broadly complete.

The new cathedral is built in traditional Byzantine-Serbian style, all gold-tiled domes and pale stone. The location is the real reward: the terrace gives a wide view down the Neretva valley, with the minarets of the old town to the south and the Velež mountain rising behind. The climb from the river takes about 20 minutes on foot.
