Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque

17th-century mosque with a minaret you can climb for the classic photograph of the Stari Most.

This 1617 Ottoman mosque on the east bank is one of the most visited in Bosnia, less for the prayer hall itself than for the minaret. A tight spiral of 89 stone steps inside the minaret leads to a balcony that gives the postcard view of the Stari Most arching between its medieval towers, with the green Neretva running below.

Visitors are welcome outside prayer times for a small fee — modest dress is expected and headscarves are loaned at the entrance. The mosque courtyard, with its small terrace overlooking the river, is itself one of the prettiest spots in the old town and a fine place to catch your breath after the climb.
