Froggyland is a collection of 507 taxidermied frogs arranged in 21 dioramas depicting human scenes: a frog concert, a frog school, frog football, frog barbershop. The scale is tiny — each frog is the size of a thumb — and the detail is extraordinary: individual music stands, tiny footballs, miniature razors. The whole thing is deeply strange and entirely unforgettable.
The museum is housed in a small space just north of the palace walls, and takes about 30 minutes to work through. It has attracted considerably more attention in recent years, partly because it is genuinely funny and partly because social media has decided it is the ultimate absurdist attraction. The entrance fee is modest. Children in particular tend to find it magnificent. Adults who were expecting ancient Roman history and get frog barbers instead rarely feel short-changed.
