Kašjuni Beach

Kašjuni is the best beach within the city of Split — a secluded pebble cove on the south side of Marjan Hill with clear blue-green water and a pine canopy that provides natural shade. It is reached by a 20-minute walk from the western edge of the old town, following the Šetalište Ivana Meštrovića around the base of Marjan and then descending through the pine trees on the Marjan path.

The beach is pebble and rock rather than sand, and the water drops off quickly from the shore — it's excellent for swimming but not for paddling. There is a small kiosk for drinks and snacks in summer. The walk back up through the pine forest is pleasant in the shade; combining a visit here with the Meštrović Gallery above makes for a good half-day route on the western side of the city, away from the palace and harbour crowds.

A story
Kašjuni is the beach that locals take visitors to when they want to show them what Split is like without tourists. It sits on the south face of Marjan Hill, a ten-minute walk from the summit path, facing open sea with no other visible development. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries this secluded cove was the preferred bathing spot for the city's professional class, who valued its privacy. It is still considerably less crowded than Bačvice.
