Klis Fortress perches on a narrow rock ridge above the gorge where the main road and railway climb north from the Split plain toward the interior of Croatia. The site is dramatic: the fortress straddles the ridge at 360 metres, with sheer drops on three sides and a view that takes in Split, the islands, the sea, and the mountains behind. It was an obvious strategic position and has been fortified since at least the 2nd century BC.
The fortress is well-preserved and fully walkable; the interior contains several distinct building phases from the medieval Croatian period through the Venetian rebuilding. The views are outstanding and the site is much less crowded than the palace in Split. Klis also featured as the city of Meereen in Game of Thrones, which has brought a new wave of visitors since the series ended. It's 15km north of Split, easily reached by bus or car in about 25 minutes.
