Gallery of Fine Arts

Split's Gallery of Fine Arts (Galerija Umjetnina) holds a collection that runs from the 14th century to the present, with a particular emphasis on Dalmatian painting and Croatian modern art. The medieval panel paintings from Hvar and Zadar are rarely seen outside specialist publications; the 20th-century Croatian section documents a range of modernist responses to European movements from impressionism to constructivism.

The gallery is located north of the old town, on the corner of the main road that leads to the Archaeological Museum — making a combined visit to both in an afternoon straightforward. The temporary exhibition programme is ambitious for the city's size; check local listings for current shows. The café on the ground floor is a good option for a break from the old town crowds.

A story
The Gallery of Fine Arts, Split, occupies a building that was originally constructed in the 1880s as a nursing home, expanded between the wars, and converted to its current purpose after WWII. The permanent collection includes several significant works by Vlaho Bukovac, Split's most celebrated 19th-century painter, who spent years in Paris before returning to Dalmatia and becoming something of a one-man cultural phenomenon — his portrait of the Croatian national revival movement fills an entire wall.
