Reduta Theatre

The Reduta Theatre on Zelný trh is one of the oldest surviving theatre buildings in Central Europe, with a history stretching back to the early 17th century. The current building dates largely from the 18th century and retains a compact Baroque interior with good acoustics and a surprisingly intimate atmosphere for a building of its age.

The theatre operates as a drama venue and also hosts chamber concerts and festivals. It is directly adjacent to the Capuchin Crypt and the Parnas Fountain, making the Zelný trh square one of the densest concentrations of historic interest in any Czech city. Guided tours of the interior can sometimes be arranged through the city tourism office.

A story
Mozart performed at the Reduta in 1767 at the age of eleven, accompanying his sister Nannerl during their tour of Central Europe. A portrait in the lobby commemorates the visit. The theatre is thought to be the oldest purpose-built theatre building in Central Europe still in continuous use — a distinction that makes its modest exterior on Zelný trh all the more surprising given how often it is walked past without notice.
