Villa Tugendhat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the defining buildings of 20th-century modernism. Mies van der Rohe's design uses a then-revolutionary open floor plan, floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide entirely into the floor, and materials of exceptional quality — travertine, onyx, and macassar ebony — to create a space that still feels radical nearly a century later.
The villa sits on a hillside in the Černá Pole district of Brno, looking out over the city. Visits are strictly by guided tour and must be booked in advance — spots fill quickly, especially in summer. Tours run in Czech and English. The garden has been restored to its original design and can be viewed separately. The interior tour lasts about an hour; allow time to absorb the space rather than rushing through it.
