European Court of Human Rights Building

Richard Rogers-designed court building anchoring Strasbourg's European Quarter beside the Ill and canal

The European Court of Human Rights building is one of the clearest architectural statements in Strasbourg's European Quarter. Designed by Richard Rogers Partnership with Claude Bucher, it sits by the water with a deliberately open, glassy form rather than the sealed look many court buildings adopt.

You usually see it from outside, since ordinary visits inside the building are limited. That is still worthwhile if you are walking the European institutions: the court, the nearby Council of Europe buildings, and the river landscape together explain why Strasbourg has a role beyond Alsace.
