The seat of the Council of Europe, built in 1977 and set in a park northeast of the old city. It is not open for casual visits, but the modernist complex — all glass and curved steel — is worth seeing from outside. Next door is the striking European Parliament building, completed in 1999. The Place de la République nearby is ringed by grand German-Gothic civic buildings from the Wilhelmine era, a reminder of the years when Strasbourg was German Strassburg.
