The Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame houses the original medieval and Renaissance art from the cathedral and the upper Rhine region — including the actual 13th-century stone sculptures that were replaced by copies on the cathedral façade. Seeing the originals up close, after looking up at the façade from the square, is a revealing experience.
The museum occupies a complex of medieval buildings adjoining the cathedral, including a 14th-century house and a 16th-century courtyard. The collection spans Rhineland art from the 10th to the 17th centuries: stained glass, goldwork, illuminated manuscripts, and paintings. It is one of the better medieval art collections in France. Open Wednesday to Monday.
