Palais Rohan

18th-century prince-bishop's palace housing three museums next to the cathedral

The Palais Rohan is Strasbourg's grandest secular building — a long classical palace built between 1732 and 1742 as the residence of the city's prince-bishops from the Rohan family. The piano nobile was designed to impress: king-sized reception rooms with elaborately gilded and painted ceilings, Gobelin tapestries, and a formal garden front facing the cathedral.

The palace now houses three museums: the Musée des Beaux-Arts (old master paintings including Raphael, Rubens, and Goya), the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (porcelain, silverware, and furnished rooms), and the Musée Archéologique (Alsatian prehistory through the Merovingian period). A combined ticket covers all three. Open Wednesday to Monday; closed Tuesday.
