Place Kléber is the main square of central Strasbourg — a large open space at the heart of the shopping district, flanked by the Aubette building on the north side (a Neoclassical structure whose interior was redecorated in 1928 by Theo van Doesburg in a radical constructivist style). The square is named after Jean-Baptiste Kléber, a Strasbourg-born general of the Revolutionary Wars, whose bronze statue stands at the centre on a sarcophagus containing his remains.
The square is the focal point for the Christmas market, which fills it from late November — one of the oldest and largest Christmas markets in Europe, drawing over two million visitors. It is also used for concerts, demonstrations, and the general life of the city. The Rue des Grandes Arcades, the main pedestrian shopping street, leads south from here.
