The Bükk National Park begins virtually at the northern edge of Miskolc, making the city one of the better base camps for hiking in Hungary. The park covers a plateau of beech and oak forest cut through with limestone karst formations, stream valleys, and rock outcrops, rising to around 960 metres at its highest point. The forest is dense and cool, a significant relief in summer when Miskolc's valley location traps heat.
There are well-marked trails for all abilities, ranging from easy woodland walks to longer ridge routes that cross the plateau from end to end. The town of Lillafüred, accessible by bus or narrow-gauge forest railway from Miskolc, makes a useful trailhead and has some of the park's most dramatic scenery — a waterfall, a lakeside castle hotel, and access to the Anna Cave and István Cave, both open for guided tours.
The park has no entrance fee. A good hiking map is essential; the Bükk-hegység turistatérkép covers all the main routes.
