The Herman Ottó Museum is the main regional museum for northeast Hungary, with collections covering archaeology, natural history, and the history of the region from prehistoric times to the present. The archaeological collection is the highlight, tracing Palaeolithic settlement of the Bükk region through to medieval Hungary with well-presented exhibits.
The museum occupies a handsome late 19th-century building near the city centre and has undergone modernisation in recent years. The permanent collections are solid; visiting exhibitions cover anything from folk art to regional industrial history. The natural history wing has some good material on the fauna of the Bükk.
It is the kind of regional museum that rewards an unhurried couple of hours, particularly for anyone interested in Hungarian prehistory or the transition from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic in this part of Central Europe.
