National Theatre of Miskolc

The National Theatre of Miskolc is one of Hungary's oldest regional theatres, with roots going back to the early 19th century. The current building, a neo-baroque structure at the southern end of Széchenyi Street, dates from 1857 and was one of the first purpose-built theatres outside Budapest. It hosts drama, opera, and dance, and has a reputation for strong productions.

The building's interior is more impressive than its exterior suggests — the auditorium has good original detailing and an unexpectedly intimate feel for a provincial theatre of this age. Performances tend to be in Hungarian, but the Opera Festival held annually in Miskolc draws international productions and performers.

If you happen to be in Miskolc for an evening and want to do something cultural, checking the theatre's programme is worthwhile. Ticket prices are reasonable by Western European standards.
