Lillafüred

Lillafüred is a resort village in the Szinva valley, about 10 kilometres west of Miskolc, and one of the most scenic spots in the Bükk Mountains. The setting is genuinely dramatic: a small lake enclosed by wooded hillsides, with a waterfall tumbling down the rock face above it, and a large neo-Gothic hotel — the Palota hotel, built in the 1920s — reflected in the water.

The Anna Cave and the István Cave are both accessible by guided tour from the village. The Anna Cave contains cave coral formations; the István Cave is larger, with chambers decorated by stalactites. Above the waterfall, trails lead up into the Bükk plateau.

Getting here is part of the experience: the narrow-gauge Lillafüred Forest Railway runs from Miskolc-Majláth station, winding through the valley on a charming 45-minute journey. The line runs several times daily in summer, less frequently in winter.

A story
The narrow-gauge forest railway that connects Miskolc to Lillafüred was built in 1928 as a leisure line — an unusual luxury in interwar Hungary. The line still runs, winding up through the forested valley on tracks only 760mm wide. On summer weekends, one of the original steam locomotives hauls the train, and the journey itself is as much of the attraction as the destination.
