Santuario dell'Annunziata and Madonna of Trapani

The Santuario dell'Annunziata (Sanctuary of the Annunciation) is Trapani's most important religious building and one of the most venerated Marian shrines in Sicily. The original church was built in the 14th century and has been substantially enlarged since, with a fine Gothic portal surviving from the earliest construction. Inside, the Cappella della Madonna contains the famous white marble statue of the Madonna of Trapani — a delicate and beautifully preserved medieval sculpture placed in an ornate baroque chapel.

The sanctuary is a working place of pilgrimage and is often busy with devotees coming to pray before the statue. The building is on the eastern edge of the city, about 15 minutes' walk from the old town centre, in an area with the Museo Pepoli immediately adjacent in the former Carmelite convent — both can be visited on the same trip.

A story
The Madonna of Trapani is a white marble statue of the Virgin and Child attributed to the Pisan sculptor Nino Pisano or his school, dating from the 14th century. Sailors venerated the Madonna as protectress of the sea, and the statue was credited with multiple miracles including the defeat of the Ottoman fleet in the naval battle of Lepanto in 1571. Every year on 15 August she is carried in procession through the streets of Trapani.
