Trapani Cathedral

The Cathedral of San Lorenzo (Basilica Cattedrale di San Lorenzo Martire) is the main church of Trapani and a refined example of Sicilian baroque. The current structure was largely built in the 17th and 18th centuries, though the site has been a church since the Norman period. The facade is particularly elegant, with a portico of three arches opening onto the pedestrian street of Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

The interior is single-aisled with six lateral chapels, decorated with polychrome marble and good late baroque paintings. The cathedral treasury contains silver processional objects and relics accumulated over centuries. The building is in very good condition and the interior is well-lit — one of the more pleasant church interiors in a city that has many churches but few in this state of maintenance.

A story
The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Lawrence the Martyr — one of the few cathedrals in Sicily not dedicated to the Virgin or a local bishop. A painting inside the cathedral, long attributed to Titian, depicts the Crucifixion; it is now thought to be by a follower of Titian rather than the master himself, but it remains one of the finest paintings in western Sicily.
