Bay of Bones Museum

The Bay of Bones is an open-air museum about 15 km south of Ohrid on the eastern shore of the lake. The centrepiece is a reconstructed pile-dwelling settlement built on the same underwater piles as the Bronze Age original — wood, thatch, and stone, fully accessible by a low walkway from shore.

Inside the huts, displays show how the original inhabitants lived, fished, and traded. A small dive operation runs guided underwater tours of the original archaeological site for certified divers. The site is reachable by car or by bicycle from Ohrid along the lakeshore road; reasonable summer-only opening hours.

A story
In 1997 Macedonian and Slovenian divers found over 6,000 wooden piles in the shallow water of Ploča Mihov Grad, the remains of a prehistoric pile-dwelling village from around 1200 BCE. Many of the piles had skulls and bones from later periods caught between them, giving the bay its modern name. The reconstructed village now sits on the original underwater stumps.
