Church of St Mary Perivleptos

The Church of St Mary Perivleptos is one of Ohrid's great medieval churches, built in 1295 and covered with frescoes by the painters Michael and Eutychius. Their work is unusually expressive for Byzantine painting, with careful modelling of faces, bodies, and fabric.

Look for the signed details on the front columns and the major fresco scenes, including the Lamentation of Christ and the Death of the Virgin. The church is a short walk from the fortress and fits naturally into an old town circuit.
