Grote Kerk (St Jacobskerk)

The Grote Kerk (St Jacobskerk) on the Oude Markt is the defining landmark of Enschede's skyline — a large Gothic hall church built in stages from the 15th century. It was extensively restored after the 1862 fire that destroyed much of the medieval city, and some of its current character reflects 19th-century reconstruction rather than original medieval work.

The church is still an active Protestant parish. The interior is whitewashed and spacious in the Dutch Reformed tradition. The tower can be climbed for views over the Twente plain on certain days; check locally for opening times.
